Why Marlborough Need's A New Theatre

Local groups have made the best of the conditions available, but the theatre is compromised technically and acoustically, particularly in the stage house. There are many health and safety issues that also need to be addressed.

·            The stage house grid’s height is unsatisfactory and the ability to fly scenic elements is non-existent.
·            Lighting bars are operated on winch sets, but because of height restrictions they are of limited value.
·            The stage house grid allows for a variable working height of 1.2–1.6 metres, which is not adequate given present health and safety standards.

·            There is no trap room, no stage basement and no raised stage.  A number of productions construct a false stage floor because of the lack of access This is an excess cost imposed on productions which has discouraged use.

·            In addition, the proportions of the auditorium do not suit most touring production set designs.  Visiting shows have to modify their sets to play the theatre.

·            The seating in the auditorium is old and uncomfortable and requires upgrading.

·            The dressing rooms are totally inadequate in terms of numbers and amenities.

·            Current compliance standards for the disabled are not satisfactory and consequently the facility is not accessible to those with disabilities.

·            There is no separate area for laundry, production office or orchestra assembly, neither is there separation between the stage house, scene dock and the dressing rooms.

·            The public foyer is limited in area and services.  The number of toilets is below present standards and access to the building is an issue.
